The divorce of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban initially looked almost exemplary. The actress filed paperwork in September of last year, and by January 7 the process was officially finalized. Calm, quick, and without public drama — at least on the surface.
Behind the scenes, however, the former couple faced serious tension over one deeply sensitive issue.
According to people close to the situation, the only real conflict during the divorce centered on custody of their two daughters, Sunday, 17, and Faith, 15. Urban reportedly pushed for equal parenting time, asking the court to grant a split arrangement that would allow both parents to spend the same amount of time with the girls.

That request reportedly came as a shock to Kidman. After nearly two decades of marriage, she was well aware of Urban’s determination, but the situation still took an emotional toll. Those close to the actress say she felt anxious and unsettled, especially as it became clear that her former husband was not willing to back down easily.
The situation also reopened old wounds. Kidman was said to be deeply concerned about history repeating itself. During her previous divorce from Tom Cruise, their adopted children ultimately chose to stay with their father — an outcome that left a lasting mark on her.
This time, however, the court ruled in Kidman’s favor.

One key factor was Urban’s demanding professional schedule. As a touring musician, his calendar is far less flexible than Kidman’s. With frequent tours already planned, the court determined that a shared custody arrangement would be impractical.
In the final ruling, the court decided that Sunday and Faith would remain primarily with their mother. Urban was granted 59 days per year to spend with his daughters — a decision that officially closed one of the most difficult chapters of the divorce.
What appeared to be a smooth separation was, in reality, shaped by fear, unresolved emotions, and the hardest question any parents can face when a marriage ends.
