Identified as a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), the animal was likely a victim of entanglement in fishing nets, a silent killer that endangers countless marine animals every year.

This incident, while deeply upsetting, is just one of many that highlight the fragile state of our oceans. The Black Sea is home to three main species of dolphins, including the common dolphin, harbor porpoise, and bottlenose dolphin. All of them face serious threats from human activity—whether it’s polluted waters, industrial noise, or, as in this case, deadly fishing practices.

The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus ponticus), another well-known resident of the Black Sea, is famous for its intelligence, social behavior, and playfulness. These dolphins, often seen riding the waves near boats, live in close-knit groups and communicate using a sophisticated language of clicks and whistles. But despite their resilience, they too are suffering from habitat loss, chemical pollution, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear.

Common dolphins, like the one that washed ashore, are especially vulnerable. Known for their striking patterns and incredible speed—reaching up to 50 km/h—they often travel in small groups and feed on fish like sprat and anchovies. These dolphins are highly sensitive to underwater noise and toxins, and when their environment is disturbed, the consequences can be fatal.

In the Black Sea, dolphins play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Sadly, as human activity intensifies, their chances of survival continue to drop. Accidents like this serve as painful reminders of how closely our actions are tied to the fate of these extraordinary creatures.

While it’s easy to admire dolphins for their beauty and charisma, it’s far more important to protect them. That means promoting responsible fishing, reducing pollution, and raising awareness about how fragile marine life truly is.
