If you ever think that it’s too late to create a beautiful life for yourself, have a look at this and get the motivation you need! 🤩💪 A 5️⃣1️⃣-year-old woman named Hilkka sold all of her glass paintings, her apartment and bought an abandoned mill! 🏚️🏗️ Everybody laughed at her until she showed it after the transformation! 😍👏 I will share the before-after photos in this article! 👇
This story has stayed with me for days. The house itself isn’t my style—there’s no trace of Scandinavian minimalism—but the journey this woman took to create it is nothing short of inspiring.

Hilkka, now 71, spent most of her life in Turku, Finland, working as an artist for various companies. When she retired, she decided to take a different path—selling her unique glass paintings independently. Though her artwork didn’t bring in large profits (even today, her pieces sell for just 8–10 euros), it was enough to cover her basic needs and pay off her loans.

In the early 2000s, at the age of 51, Hilkka shocked everyone with a life-changing decision. She sold her apartment in Turku, borrowed money from her brother, and took out multiple loans to buy an old, abandoned mill in her childhood town. Her vision? To transform the rundown building into a gallery home—a place where she could live, paint, and welcome visitors.

The mill, built in the 1920s, had been left to decay, surrounded by overgrown weeds. Most people thought she was making a mistake. The renovation would be costly and time-consuming, and many doubted she could pull it off. But Hilkka was determined. She sold nearly everything she owned—her apartment, car, furniture, and even her jewelry—keeping only her bicycle and a single set of clothes.

The restoration process took ten years.

The first year was spent clearing the land, and even after that, the work on the building was far from finished.

The renovation involved dismantling some of the existing structures, insulating the roof, and installing underfloor heating. It wasn’t just hired workers who helped—volunteers, local residents, and an old childhood friend with his skilled son all contributed to bringing the space back to life.

Hilkka faced her share of struggles along the way. She broke her ankle, and later, she suffered two ischemic strokes. But none of these hardships weakened her resolve.

Today, the once-abandoned mill has become Hilkka’s true home. The ground floor serves as both a workshop and an art gallery, while the upper level is her private living space.

Though there were times she questioned her decision, now at 71, she has no regrets. The mill has become everything she ever dreamed of—a place filled with art, history, and the life she created with her own hands.

Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and the willingness to start over, no matter the odds.
