What started as a simple day of moving furniture quickly turned into a terrifying accident for three friends in Connecticut. Diane Martin was preparing to move into a new home and had enlisted the help of her close friends, Angela and Christopher Towne, to shift some heavy furniture. None of them expected the floor itself to become the biggest problem.
While adjusting the position of a couch, Christopher suddenly felt the floor give way beneath his feet. In a split second, he disappeared from view — crashing through the boards and plunging nearly nine meters straight down. What broke his fall? A shallow pool of water at the bottom of what turned out to be a long-forgotten well.
Angela immediately dialed emergency services, still in shock at what had just happened. Thankfully, Christopher survived the fall with no serious injuries — a miracle, considering the depth and suddenness of the drop.

Once firefighters and rescue crews arrived, they managed to extract him safely. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the home Diane had just moved into was built in the mid-1800s. The well had originally been located outside, but renovations over the past century had extended the structure — eventually leaving the well hidden beneath the floorboards of the house.
At some point, someone had simply covered the opening with a wooden platform, likely forgetting — or ignoring — what lay beneath. Over time, the covering had weakened, becoming a hidden hazard that no one noticed until it was too late.

Had the accident happened while Christopher was alone, or if he had hit something solid on the way down, the outcome could’ve been far more tragic. Fortunately, he escaped with minor injuries and a wild story to tell.
Let this serve as a strange but important reminder: in old homes, you never really know what’s beneath your feet.
