When Hannah and Mark finally bought their dream home, they couldn’t wait to move in. A big yard, plenty of light, and enough space for their golden retriever, Buddy, to run free.
But the moment they opened the front door, something felt… off.
Buddy, usually the most playful, tail-wagging dog in the world, stopped dead at the threshold. His ears went back, his body stiff. Hannah tugged gently on his leash. “Come on, boy!” she coaxed.
He wouldn’t move.
Days passed, but Buddy refused to step inside. He’d dart happily around the yard, chase squirrels, roll in the grass — but the second they tried to bring him into the house, he planted his paws and growled low in his throat.
At first, Hannah laughed it off. “Maybe he just misses the old place.” But deep down, unease gnawed at her. Dogs didn’t act like this for no reason.
Finally, after a week, Mark decided to investigate. That night, he noticed Buddy fixated on a specific spot in the living room — his eyes locked on a patch of floorboards near the fireplace.
Curious, Mark pried the boards open. What he found made his blood run cold.
Beneath the floor was a small wooden box, wrapped in cloth. Inside lay old photographs, a stack of letters, and a tarnished locket. The letters told a tragic story: the family who once lived there had lost a child — and the grief had never left the house.
Hannah’s hands shook as she read the final letter, written by the mother: “May this house always remember her.”
Buddy lay quietly now, no longer growling — as if the secret had finally been uncovered.
Hannah and Mark buried the box under the oak tree in the yard, placing flowers on top. That evening, for the very first time, Buddy walked through the front door without hesitation.
