Stories of dogs showing loyalty and bravery never get old, and this one is no exception. A hiking trip that could have ended in tragedy turned into a tale of devotion and survival — all thanks to a young dog named Nord.

Greg Brkic had long dreamed of exploring Croatia’s breathtaking Velebit mountains, which stretch along the Adriatic coast. So when the chance finally came, he packed his gear — and brought his Alaskan Malamute, Nord, along for the adventure.

But what began as an exciting journey quickly turned dangerous. While hiking at nearly 1,800 meters above sea level, Greg slipped and suffered a serious fall, leaving him unable to move. His companions were unable to reach him directly and quickly called for emergency help. Nord, however, didn’t hesitate — he made his way to Greg and stayed by his side.

Rescue teams would later say that the dog’s presence likely saved Greg’s life. With freezing temperatures and snow all around, Greg lay injured on the ground for nearly 13 hours. Throughout the entire ordeal, Nord curled up beside him, using his body heat to keep his owner warm and alive.

A large rescue operation involving 30 mountaineers eventually reached them and carried Greg to safety. Afterward, he shared just how much it meant to have Nord with him: “Every second felt like an eternity, but my dog — he’s a miracle.”

Even when Greg was placed on a stretcher, Nord refused to leave his side. One powerful photo shows the pup lying next to him, loyal and calm, even as rescuers worked around them.

Emergency crews praised Nord’s loyalty, saying that without the dog’s warmth and company, Greg might not have survived the night. They also issued a reminder that while dogs can be incredible companions on hikes, extreme caution should be taken — especially in dangerous terrains where both people and pets can be at risk.
