If you are a gardener, this super watering hack will be a game-changer for you! 👩🌾💦 One of my colleagues came across an old article about drip irrigation and decided to refine it as a result of which he discovered an effective method of watering! 🧐🤩 For this DIY irrigation system you only need a 5️⃣-liter plastic bottle! 😯🙌 I will share the step-by-step guide in this article! 👇
Every gardener eventually faces the same challenge—how to keep plants well-watered without spending hours on the task. One of my work friends, a natural-born innovator, stumbled upon an old Soviet magazine article about drip irrigation. But instead of just copying the method, he decided to refine it. The results? Absolutely game-changing!
His simple yet effective system dramatically increased his harvest, and after seeing it in action, I knew I had to share it with you.
A DIY Drip Irrigation System—Easy & Effective
Creating this watering system requires just one basic item—a five-liter plastic bottle. If you have a larger container, that works too, but this size is perfect for most garden beds.
How to Set It Up
Drill Small Holes
Make 2 to 4 small holes in the bottle. The size depends on your soil type, but I found that 3mm holes worked well.
Use an awl or a thin drill bit, and make sure the holes are positioned about 3cm above the bottom to prevent clogging.
Placement for Different Plants
For tomatoes: Two holes on opposite sides are enough. Fill the bottle with water and bury it about 20 cm into the soil. This setup provides water to two plants at once.
For cucumbers: Create four evenly spaced holes around the bottle. The principle remains the same, but this setup ensures proper moisture distribution.
Important Tip: Avoid making too many holes or leaving the cap off—otherwise, the water will drain out in an hour instead of gradually soaking in.
