My Mum Turns Old Egg Cartons into Brilliant Household Creations Instead of Throwing Them Away

One day I saw my mother keep old egg cartons and asked why she did that but the answer left me speechless! 🄚🤐 Instead of throwing them away, she uses them for creative purposes turning the seemingly useless items into brilliant household creations! šŸ˜šŸ‘ Who might think that they can serve as seed starters and even DIY craft materials? 😯🫣 I will show how to do that in this article! šŸ‘‡

My mum has an incredible talent for giving discarded items a second life. She never lets anything go to waste, always finding ways to turn everyday objects into something practical and creative for our home.

Recently, I noticed that she never throws out empty egg cartons. At first, I didn’t think much of it—until I saw all the clever ways she repurposed them!

Egg Cartons as Perfect Seed Starters
Because of their compartmentalized shape, egg cartons make excellent seedling trays. They hold soil well, allow for proper airflow, and help young plants establish strong roots.

Beyond that, she even uses them as a planting guide. By pressing the bottom of the carton into the soil, she creates evenly spaced indentations—ideal for planting radishes, lettuce, or other small crops. This simple trick makes gardening much easier and more organized.

Transforming Egg Cartons into DIY Craft Material
But my mum’s creativity doesn’t stop in the garden! She also turns old egg cartons into an eco-friendly craft material.

First, she tears the cartons into small pieces and soaks them in boiling water for about 30 minutes. Once softened, she blends them into a smooth pulp.

Then, she boils the mixture again for another 15 minutes before straining out the excess water. At this stage, she prepares a special binding solution by mixing glue and water (in a 2:1 ratio), adding a bit of putty, and combining it with the paper pulp. The result? A durable and moldable material perfect for crafting!

Creative Uses for Recycled Egg Carton Pulp
With this homemade material, my mum makes all sorts of unique decorations, including:

Handmade figurines
Picture frames
Decorative wall panels
Small planters for succulents
Turning Waste into Something Beautiful
With just a little imagination, she transforms what most people would consider trash into something both useful and beautiful. It’s a reminder that everyday items can have surprising second lives—you just need the creativity to see their potential!
