Many homeowners deal with the frustration of a neighbor constructing a building right on the property line. Since this can be an inconvenient and intrusive situation, we decided to share how we tackled it.
The Problem: A Two-Story Build Right on the Border
Everyone knows that construction regulations require a setback of at least a meter from the property line, especially when building a house.
However, our neighbor disregarded this rule and added a two-story extension that directly touched the boundary. Initially, we didn’t think much of it, but then he went a step further—he installed an attic with a window facing our yard. That window is what really annoyed us.
Attempting to Reason with the Neighbor
As soon as we realized what was happening, we tried to address it diplomatically. We spoke with the neighbor, but he brushed off our concerns, insisting that his design was already finalized and he wouldn’t be making any changes just to accommodate us.
We then turned to our town’s Architectural Office, hoping for some legal intervention. While they confirmed that our neighbor’s construction was indeed illegal, they also admitted that enforcement was weak. Even if we took him to court and won, there would be no real consequences, as authorities wouldn’t force him to demolish the extension.
Our Creative Solution
Since legal action wasn’t a viable option, we took matters into our own hands. We had an old shed near the boundary, so we decided to modify it. We extended its height and adjusted the roof so that it completely blocked the neighbor’s intrusive window.
Problem solved!
