This tale could easily be mistaken for a plot from a movie, but it’s a true story. It all began when a seven-year-old boy named Tyrel participated in a charity event in the year 2000.
Tyrel collected school supplies, wrote a letter, and placed everything, including a photo of himself, into a cardboard box. The package was sent as a Christmas gift to a developing country, though Tyrel had no idea where it would end up. Soon after, he forgot about the entire event.
Fast forward nine years, and a woman named Joanna, from the capital city of the Philippines, sent Tyrel a friend request on Facebook. At first, Tyrel dismissed it as spam and ignored her request.
However, Joanna reached out again, this time explaining that she had received the Christmas gift from Tyrel back in 2000. This reminded Tyrel of the charity event, and the two began exchanging messages.
As their online friendship grew, Tyrel decided to visit Joanna in 2014. It was his first time traveling alone to a foreign country, and he was nervous about whether his Malaysian girlfriend would like him in person.
When they finally met, it was clear that they shared an undeniable connection. Tyrel stayed for a week, and shortly after, he returned to the Philippines with a proposal. He brought with him an engagement ring and asked her to marry him.
Their wedding was held according to Filipino traditions, with Tyrel wearing a traditional wedding shirt called a barong. Later, the couple celebrated their marriage again in the United States.
Today, the couple lives in Tyrel’s hometown of Idaho, where he works on a construction site, and Joanna focuses on raising their young son.
