Sisters are supposed to be your first best friends. That’s how it had always been for Anna and Claire. They grew up sharing secrets, sneaking into each other’s rooms at night, whispering about crushes and dreams. Even as adults, their bond stayed unshakable — or so Anna thought.
Anna trusted Claire with everything. When she started dating Ryan, Claire was the first to know. She shared every detail: the way his laugh made her heart race, the flowers he surprised her with, the silly inside jokes only they understood. Claire teased her, but she always smiled, always listened.
But then, little things started to feel… off.
Anna noticed how Claire’s phone buzzed constantly when they hung out. How she’d smile at the screen, then quickly tuck it away. How she always seemed to step outside to “make a call” when Anna wasn’t looking.
One evening, Anna stopped by Claire’s apartment unannounced. Claire looked startled, clutching her phone like it was something fragile. Anna laughed it off, telling herself she was being paranoid. It’s just work. Or a friend. Stop overthinking.
But the unease grew.
One night, as they sat on the couch watching a movie, Claire left to grab popcorn — and her phone lit up on the coffee table. Anna glanced without meaning to. Her stomach flipped.
It was a message from Ryan.
Her Ryan.
Her hands shook as she picked up the phone. There it was: a string of messages, late-night conversations, inside jokes that sounded far too familiar. Words she thought Ryan only said to her.
When Claire returned, Anna’s face was pale. “Why is Ryan texting you?” she asked, voice barely above a whisper.
Claire froze. For a long moment, the room was silent except for the sound of the movie playing in the background. Finally, she whispered, “Anna… I didn’t want you to find out like this.”
Tears blurred Anna’s vision. “Find out what?”
Claire’s voice cracked. “Ryan and I… we’ve been talking for months. I tried to stop it. I told him it was wrong. But… I couldn’t.”
The words cut deeper than any betrayal Anna had ever imagined. It wasn’t just her boyfriend. It was her sister. The one person she thought she could always trust.
That night, Anna walked out of Claire’s apartment shaking, her world in pieces. She didn’t know who to be angrier at — the man who had promised her love, or the sister who had promised her loyalty.
And for the first time in her life, Anna realized that sometimes, the people you trust the most are the very ones who can break you in ways no stranger ever could.
