American Woman Spends $10,000 on Heart Surgery for Her Pet Chicken

“Would you spend $10,000 to save a chicken?” 🐔💔 For Seleta Notnagel, the answer was yes — because to her, this bird isn’t just a pet, it’s family. See the story and photos that left everyone stunned in the article below 👇📸

Most people would never dream of spending thousands of dollars on a chicken—but for Seleta Notnagel, love has no limits.

Her pet chicken, Blue, began showing worrying signs last spring—struggling to breathe, constantly tired, and worst of all, refusing the cuddles she once adored. Concerned, Seleta rushed her beloved bird to specialists, who ran a full range of medical tests including bloodwork, scans, and imaging.

At first, doctors feared the worst, suspecting cancer. But further examinations revealed a congenital heart defect that caused heart and breathing problems. Without surgery, Blue would not survive.

For Seleta, who had raised Blue since she was a chick bought for just $12, the choice was obvious. She describes Blue as her soulmate—sleeping on her bedside table, spending hours perched on her lap, and enjoying favorite treats like watermelon, strawberries, cheese, and cookies. “She’s family,” Seleta explained. “There’s no difference between loving a dog, a cat, or a chicken.”

In November, veterinary surgeons performed a groundbreaking heart procedure—something usually reserved for children, dogs, or cats, but rarely attempted on chickens. The operation was risky, but a success. Within 12 hours, Blue was behaving as if nothing had ever been wrong.

The bill, however, was staggering. Between consultations, testing, and surgery, the total reached $10,000, with insurance covering only a fraction. Seleta admits people think she’s crazy, but she stands by her choice: “No one would question spending this kind of money on a child or a dog. Why should it be different for a chicken? Pets are family.”
