How an Egg Carton Can Be Surprisingly Useful in Your Entryway – A Genius Reader Tip

“I’ll never throw egg cartons away again.” These simple trays turned out to be genius for gardening, grilling, and even rainy days 🥚🌧️ You have to see these clever uses in the article 👇

You’ll never guess how an ordinary cardboard egg tray can be handy around the house. I was surprised myself when I learned this clever hack, shared by one of my blog readers in the comments.

Since moving into our new house almost a year ago, we’ve been buying eggs in bulk – 30 at a time – sold on flat trays. Over the winter, I accumulated quite a stack of these cartons. I was about to throw them out, but my husband stopped me, saying we could use them in the garden.

🥚 My Husband’s Garden Hacks:

  1. Seed spacing tool. Place the tray on the soil and press lightly to create evenly spaced holes for planting seeds.

  2. Radish planter. Cut out the bottom of each egg cup, press the tray into the ground, drop in the seeds, and cover with soil.

  3. Mulch alternative. Place trays under berry bushes to suppress weeds and keep fruit off the dirt. Cut them into smaller pieces to use under strawberries so the berries don’t rot or get eaten by ants.

🔥 My Own Discovery:
We don’t have a fireplace to burn them, but we do have a grill! I started tearing the cartons into small pieces to use as kindling under charcoal. They catch fire quickly and work perfectly.

👟 The Brilliant Reader Tip:
One of my readers shared a tip that I found especially useful for rainy days. She keeps egg cartons in her entryway and, during wet weather, places them on the floor as disposable shoe trays. The cartons absorb mud, dirt, and water dripping off shoes.

Once they’re dirty, you can simply throw them away – no scrubbing the floor or cleaning shoe mats. This hack is especially helpful during autumn’s muddiest weeks.

🌞 Bonus Use:
After washing sneakers, I now place them on these cartons to dry in the sun. The shoes dry faster and stay off the ground.
