Ever had a neighbor push the boundaries? 🏠💥 When ours built a second-story window overlooking our yard, we had to get creative to regain our privacy. 😳 Want to know how we handled it? 👀 Find out the full story in the article below! 👇
Dealing with neighbors can be tricky, especially when property boundaries come into play. We learned this firsthand when our neighbor decided to test the limits — quite literally.
It all started when the man next door began expanding his home. At first, we didn’t think much of it. But soon, he added a second-story extension that was built right up to the edge of our shared property line — which, as many homeowners know, usually requires at least a one-meter setback.
Things took a turn when he started building an attic with a large window that looked directly into our yard. That felt like a huge invasion of privacy.
We decided to address the issue calmly and asked him to reconsider the window. But he brushed us off, saying his plans were final and he had no interest in changing them to make us feel more comfortable.
So, we contacted the local planning office. They confirmed he was technically violating building codes — but said there was little they could do. Even if we took him to court and won, they explained, it wouldn’t necessarily force him to tear down the extension or block the window. In other words, we’d be stuck with an unwanted view no matter what.
That’s when we had an idea.
We had an old shed near the property line, fully legal and within regulation. So we made some upgrades: we raised its height and redesigned the roof to completely block the neighbor’s new window.
Before starting, we informed him of our plans. Since our structure was compliant with all local rules and kept the required distance from the boundary, there was nothing he could say or do to stop us.
The result? We now have our privacy back — and he has a lovely view of the side of our shed.
He doesn’t seem thrilled, but we’re more than satisfied with how things turned out.
