She thought it was a puppy—the heartwarming story of a dog who raised a baby seal as her own

“She thought he was her puppy — but he was a seal” 🐶💧💔 On a frozen lake in Siberia, a station dog named Nika adopted a rescued seal pup as her own. She fed, protected, and loved him until it was time to say goodbye. Their bond melted hearts across the world. Full story in the article below 👇🐾

Nature has a heartwarming way of surprising us—especially when one animal takes another under its wing. That’s exactly what happened when a devoted dog mistook a helpless baby seal for one of her own.

On the frozen shores of Lake Baikal, a team of meteorologists stumbled upon a tiny seal pup clinging to life. The baby was weak, cold, and barely responsive. The group didn’t think twice—they brought him back to their station and gave him a name: Umka.

But the real surprise came from Nika, the station dog. The moment she saw Umka, she sprang into action. She began licking him gently, sticking close by his side, and refusing to leave him alone. It was as if she believed he was one of her pups.

Feeding Umka was another challenge. Since seals naturally eat in water, the team filled a tub and hand-fed him fish while Nika stood guard nearby. When he wasn’t eating, Umka would warm himself on the rocks or snuggle beside his furry companion.

With time, food, and lots of affection, Umka grew stronger. The bond between him and Nika only deepened, but eventually, it was time to return him to the wild. Even then, he didn’t swim off right away. It took three days before he finally left the shore—he simply didn’t want to say goodbye to the dog who had saved him.

Nika watched him go with a heavy heart, but didn’t stay sad for long. Soon after, she was busy caring for the station’s baby goats, proving her loving instincts had no boundaries.

Could you imagine a bond like this between such different animals? Let us know what you think!
