Sometimes, good fortune appears when you least expect it—especially when you’re simply out enjoying life. That’s exactly what happened to Noreen and Michael Vredberg, a retired couple from California, who turned a casual visit to a state park into a sparkling discovery.
Since retiring in 2011, the Vredbergs have spent much of their time exploring national parks across the U.S. On a recent trip to Arkansas, they decided to make a spontaneous stop at Crater of Diamonds State Park, a unique location where anyone can dig for gems and possibly walk away with something extraordinary.
The park isn’t known for producing valuable diamonds anymore, but it remains a beloved tourist spot for those curious enough to search. After visiting nearby hot springs, Noreen and Michael figured it would be a fun way to spend a couple of hours.
And it turns out, their timing couldn’t have been better. Rain had fallen the day before, washing away layers of dust and making the surface cleaner. By morning, the sun was shining—perfect conditions for spotting something glittering in the soil. Within less than an hour of casually searching, Noreen noticed a shiny stone and tucked it into her pocket, not realizing just how lucky she was.
Later, at the park’s diamond discovery center, experts quickly confirmed the find: a genuine 4.38-carat yellow diamond. While yellow stones aren’t as rare as colorless ones, their vibrant hue often makes them more desirable. Even more impressive—it turned out to be the largest diamond discovered at the park in the past year.
Noreen named the gem “Lucy” after their beloved kitten. As for its value, that remains a mystery. Since the diamond legally belongs to Noreen, it’s up to her to decide whether to keep it as a souvenir or turn it into something more.
