Would you turn an old bakery into a modern two-story flat? A daring couple in the UK did just that—transforming a former biscuit factory into a warm, functional home. Here’s how they brought their vision to life.
Back in 2016, an old biscuit factory in Bethnal Green, East London, was being sold off in parts. That’s when architects Sarah L’Esperance and Michael Putman spotted an opportunity. The couple purchased a modest section of the property for £485,000. Fast-forward to today, and the renovated space is worth around £695,000.

Though the area measures just 60 square meters, Sarah and Michael used their design skills to make every inch count. The compact space now includes two bedrooms, a home office, a cozy living area, a walk-in wardrobe, and a separate bathroom and toilet—all spread over two levels.

Before renovations began, the couple stripped away the dated wooden panels that had lined the walls since the 1980s. What they discovered underneath was a layer of stunning original brick, which they chose to leave exposed to highlight the building’s industrial past.
To define spaces without blocking light, they used birchwood partitions—creating clear zones while keeping the flat bright and open. Because the rooms are quite small, every design choice had to be intentional and efficient.

One of the cleverest moves was building a mezzanine office on the upper level. Thanks to the 3.5-meter ceilings, they were able to add this much-needed workspace without sacrificing comfort. The only thing they couldn’t squeeze inside? Their bikes. But even that was solved with a neat storage area near the entrance.
What began as an old bakery has now become a stylish, compact home—with all the comforts of modern living, and a story baked right into the bricks.
