The story originates from the Second St. Elizabeth’s Flood, one of the deadliest natural disasters in Dutch history. The catastrophe struck in 1421 when a violent storm in the North Sea sent towering waves crashing into the land. Entire villages were submerged, and while historical records are imprecise, estimates suggest anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 lives were lost—some sources even claim an astonishing 100,000 victims.
With many settlements wiped off the map, most population records disappeared along with them, making it difficult to determine the true extent of the tragedy. At the time, local parish books served as the primary documentation of residents, but these too were lost beneath the raging waters.
