With just a bit of creativity and effort, you can transform ordinary materials into a stylish and functional garden feature.

Start by selecting a convenient spot in your garden where you’ll be comfortable working. Ideally, the ground should be flat to ensure a stable structure.

Next, compact some wet sand to create a solid base. After that, take the umbrella (without its handle) and place it upside down. This will serve as the foundation for your project.

Turning an Old Umbrella into a Garden Feature

Mix cement and water to form a smooth, liquid consistency. Be sure not to add sand yet! Pour this mixture over the umbrella’s dome, spreading it evenly, and allow it to begin setting.

Once the base layer is firm enough, drill a hole in the center of the umbrella and insert a PVC pipe. This pipe will provide extra support to the structure.

Place a layer of wire mesh on top of the umbrella. This will reinforce the structure and prevent cracks from forming.

Crafting a Durable Garden Decoration

Now, prepare a thicker cement-sand mixture (with a ratio of 1:2) and spread it over the wire mesh. Smooth the surface and allow it to dry for about 24 hours.

While your umbrella base is drying, start preparing the structure’s foundation. Place the PVC pipe in a greased plastic bowl, then pour the same cement-sand mixture into it. For added strength, you can include broken bricks or metal pieces into the mixture.

Assembling the Garden Piece

Once both parts are completely dry, carefully remove them from their molds. Use cement mortar to attach the umbrella to the base, acting as a glue. Allow the entire structure to fully set and cure.

Now it’s time to add your personal touch! Coat the piece with a primer and paint it in a color that complements your garden’s style. Once dry, finish with a protective varnish to ensure its longevity.

The Final Result

The finished product can serve as a creative flowerbed — simply add soil and plant your favorite flowers. You now have a unique, handmade garden decoration that will brighten up your outdoor space!
