Did you know you can grow a lemon tree from a single seed? It’s easier than you’d think and adds a splash of nature and vitality to your space. All you need is a ripe lemon, some soil, and a little patience.
Start by picking out 12 to 15 of the healthiest seeds from a fresh lemon. Rinse off any pulp and immerse them in warm water for several hours. This helps loosen the seed coat and speeds up the germination process.

Then, choose a pot with drainage holes to avoid water accumulation. Use slightly acidic soil—something designed for cacti or mixed with peat moss works well. Choose a sunny spot in your home, as lemons love light. If natural sunlight is limited, a grow light can help.
Plant the soaked seeds about 2 centimeters deep in the soil. Mist the soil gently to maintain moisture without making it too wet. Place plastic wrap over the pot and create small holes for air circulation. In about two weeks, you’ll start to see little green sprouts emerging.

After the seedlings emerge, water them sparingly—usually once a week. Make sure the airflow around the plant helps prevent mold growth, either by opening a window or using a small fan. Feeding the plant with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer will promote strong and healthy growth.

After about three years, the first fruits will start to appear. To get larger, better-quality lemons, thin out the young fruit by removing about two-thirds of them. You’ll know a lemon is ripe when it turns bright yellow and feels slightly soft to the touch. Once picked, they can stay fresh for up to two months.

Cultivating a lemon tree from seed is not only simple but incredibly rewarding. With just a little care, you’ll have a vibrant, fragrant plant that might even brighten your day with fresh lemons.
