In Australia, a long-lost sheep wandered back to humans after years in the wild, desperately in need of assistance. The biggest issue? A massive, unshorn fleece weighing it down.
Nicknamed “Cocky,” this sheep was once domesticated but had spent years roaming free. However, after a long time struggling in the wilderness, Cocky seemed to realize that life among humans was far easier. Instead of running away, the animal approached people on its own, silently pleading for help. Those who found him were shocked by the sheer amount of wool he had grown—his thick coat had become almost unmanageable.
It was clear Cocky had once been owned. A faint mark from a rope around his neck suggested he had been tethered before escaping into the wild. Experts estimated he had been on his own for around four years, likely fleeing as a young lamb. But as a breed raised for farming, he wasn’t built for survival in nature. The most obvious struggle he faced was his wool—his fleece had grown nearly 20 centimeters thick, weighing him down and making movement difficult. In total, he was carrying more than 20 kilograms of excess wool, almost half his own body weight!
Seeing how much he was suffering, his rescuers immediately stepped in. They provided food and water before beginning the difficult task of shearing. It wasn’t an easy job—his fleece was tangled, matted, and incredibly heavy. But once the thick layer of wool was finally removed, Cocky’s relief was clear. His face seemed to light up, freed from the overwhelming burden he had carried for years.
Now, Cocky is receiving medical care and undergoing a process of re-socialization before joining a flock of other sheep. For now, he is settling into his temporary home at an animal rescue center—where he’s even getting spoiled with biscuits!
