Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio has a unique connection to Ukraine through his heritage.
The grandmother of the Oscar-winning actor was originally from Odessa, Ukraine. Following the October Revolution, her family moved to Germany, where she grew up, married a German man, and took the last name Indenbirken. Renamed Helen, she became the mother of DiCaprio’s own mother, who was born in 1943 in a bomb shelter during World War II. Later, after the war, the Indenbirken family immigrated to the United States, where Leonardo—called after Leonardo da Vinci—was born.
DiCaprio had a close bond with his grandmother, Helen, who played an essential role in his early life. Recently, a vintage photo circulating online displays a very young DiCaprio having a meal at his grandmother’s table, highlighting his deep family roots.
Even after achieving stardom, DiCaprio stayed close to his grandmother, visiting her as often as he could and always speaking fondly of her. She died in 2008 at the 93, having witnessed her grandson rise to fame in films like Titanic.
“Grandma was the most resilient and complete person I’ve ever known. Nothing could shake her!” DiCaprio once recalled.
