A new coral-pink rose, specially cultivated by gardeners, has been named in honor of the Princess. Appropriately titled «The Catherine Rose», the flower continues the longstanding tradition of naming roses after members of the British royal family—just as Princess Diana once had a rose named after her. In Britain, calling someone a true English rose has become a classic compliment for a beautiful and graceful woman.
This tradition goes back to medieval times, when white roses symbolized the Virgin Mary, and red roses stood for courage and loyalty—long before they became a symbol of love. This type of flower holds deep significance in British history. The red rose was the emblem of the House of Lancaster, and the white rose symbolized the House of York. Their bitter conflict became known as the Wars of the Roses. In the end, both dynasties lost power, and Henry VII Tudor ascended the throne. He united the two symbols in his royal emblem and married Elizabeth of York referred to as the true White Rose.
The new rose is prized by gardeners for its vibrant blooms. It features a mango-like fragrance. According to the Royal Horticultural Society, a portion of the proceeds from sales will go to charity.
The Royal Marsden was founded in 1851 by W. Marsden, after losing his wife to the same illness that, in 2024, was diagnosed in the Princess. She has since become one of the hospital’s patrons and has visited the institution several times following her remission. The first rose went on sale on May 16 and the price starts at 29.99 euros.
