Prince William, now 42, has recently shared some deeply personal insights about his familyās struggles. He revealed that his wife, Kate Middleton, and his father, King Charles III, have both faced health battles that have affected him profoundly.
During his recent four-day tour in South Africa, Prince William presented the prestigious Earthshot Prize and met with environmental advocates and volunteers. On the last day of his visit, dressed in a thrifted blue blazer as part of his commitment to sustainable fashion, he sat down for an emotional interview.
William acknowledged that the past year has been incredibly challenging. “Honestly? Itās been rough, maybe the hardest year of my life. Trying to manage it all and stay focused has been tough,” he admitted, his voice dropping slightly.
King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer following a routine prostate operation earlier this year and has since been undergoing weekly treatments, showing signs of improvement. In March, Kate Middleton shared her own diagnosis, and by September, she proudly announced that she had completed chemotherapy and overcome cancer.
“Iām immensely proud of both my wife and my father for how theyāve handled everything,” William said with heartfelt admiration. He shared that, despite appearances, he has struggled to maintain a calm demeanor. “Itās interesting you say I seemed relaxed,” he noted, referring to observations of his behavior in Cape Town. “This year, thatās been nearly impossible.”
As the future King, William has expressed his intention to approach his role differently than his father, Charles III, and his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Although he feels the weight of his new role as Prince of Wales, he embraces the chance to focus on projects that can make a meaningful global impactālike his Earthshot Prize.
“Responsibility and freedom are a challenging combination,” William admitted. “Do I like the increased responsibility? Not really. But I appreciate the freedom to create initiatives like Earthshot. Itās crucial that I use my position for good and to help others,” he shared with The Daily Mail.
During his tour, William attended an exhibit showcasing innovative seaweed products and bought a pair of seaweed-crafted earrings for Kate. Reflecting on his environmental initiative, he described Earthshot as a collaborative effort that requires constant dedication. “Itās a lot of behind-the-scenes workāmeetings, calls, lettersāall of itās focused on making Earthshot the best it can be. Iād like it to feel more like a team effort,” he said.
