Most people automatically choose ceramic tiles when renovating a kitchen. They are practical, familiar and considered the safest option for walls near cooking areas. But one homeowner decided to completely ignore the usual rules — and transformed a tiny kitchen using ordinary laminate flooring instead.
At first, the idea sounded risky.
Laminate is normally associated with floors, not kitchen walls exposed to heat, steam and moisture. But once the renovation was finished, the unusual experiment immediately started attracting attention online thanks to its modern and surprisingly cozy appearance.
To make the small kitchen more functional, the owners divided the space into separate zones using a plasterboard construction. Inside the newly created niche, they installed the kitchen set and added built-in spotlights above the work area. The extra lighting made the compact room feel brighter and visually larger while also improving functionality during cooking.
Originally, the owner planned to use traditional tiles for the walls. However, during the renovation process, she suddenly changed her mind and chose laminate panels instead. That unexpected decision became the main visual highlight of the entire apartment. The warm wood texture instantly made the kitchen feel more stylish and modern compared to classic glossy tile interiors.
Because the kitchen itself was very small, every detail had to be carefully planned. To save space, the microwave and oven were installed vertically one above another. Large upper cabinets were completely removed and replaced with open shelves that made the room feel lighter and less crowded. The laminate and furniture were selected in similar shades to create one harmonious color palette, while a white wall and light dining table added contrast and helped visually expand the space.
The dining area also received laminate decoration on the walls, combined with soft decorative lighting that added warmth and atmosphere in the evenings. The final result looked far more expensive and designer-inspired than many expected from such a budget-friendly renovation.
Still, not everyone is fully convinced this idea will remain practical long term.
Many people pointed out that laminate does not always react well to humidity, steam and temperature changes commonly found in kitchens. Areas near the stove and sink may become especially problematic over time. While some viewers praised the originality of the project, others admitted they would still prefer moisture-resistant panels, decorative plaster or classic ceramic tiles for durability reasons.
But regardless of the debate, one thing became clear: this tiny kitchen renovation definitely proved that even the most ordinary materials can create a stunning interior when used creatively.
