Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can lead to the most unexpected bond. That’s what happened when a young girl in the UK helped an injured bumblebee—and ended up with a tiny, winged best friend.
Lacey Shillinglaw was out walking her dog when she nearly stepped on a struggling insect lying in the middle of a footpath. Curious, she looked closer and saw a bumblebee with a damaged wing, clearly unable to fly. Wanting to protect it from being crushed by passing feet, she gently let it crawl onto her hand and carried it to some nearby flowers.
She tried to place it on a bloom so it could recover in peace, but the bumblebee wasn’t interested. It clung tightly to her hand, refusing to leave. After several minutes of trying, Lacey gave in—and brought her new friend home.
She named the bumblebee Betty, and to everyone’s surprise, the tiny insect settled into life indoors without hesitation. Lacey’s family was supportive of the unusual guest, and within a few days, Betty had won over the entire household with her charm.
Though the windows remained open, Betty never attempted to fly away. Instead, she preferred to spend her time perched on Lacey’s shoulder, nestled in her hair, or even riding on her sunglasses as they walked together. The sight of a girl strolling with a bumblebee in her hair often left strangers amazed.
Betty eats alongside Lacey at the table—though her meals are a bit different. The family keeps tiny dishes of honey, sugar water, and even strawberry jam just for her. At night, she sleeps in a cozy jar, only to return to Lacey’s side each morning.
Even when taken outside to enjoy the garden, Betty never strays far. She might explore flowers nearby, but the moment Lacey moves away, the bumblebee buzzes after her, refusing to be left behind.
Interestingly, Betty shows no interest in anyone else in the family. She stays close to Lacey and avoids her parents, siblings, and even the dog. And despite living in a human home, she’s never once stung anyone.
Lacey is grateful for their unusual friendship, even though she knows it won’t last forever. Bumblebees live only a few short weeks, but for now, she’s cherishing every moment with her fluffy little companion.
