While enjoying a boat ride off the Mexican coast, Stephanie Broman and her partner Paul came across something floating in the water that looked like a clump of garbage. What they discovered next has since captured the attention of thousands online.

The couple was cruising near New California, Mexico, when Stephanie spotted what appeared to be a bundle of waste drifting along. But as they drew closer, she realized it wasn’t trash at all — it was a distressed whale.

The massive creature had become trapped in a large tangle of debris and fishing nets, which had wrapped tightly around its fins. Judging by the state of the whale, it had likely been dragging the mess along for many kilometers, unable to swim freely.

Moved by the sight, Stephanie and Paul decided to step in. Without hesitation, Paul jumped into the water to try to help the animal.

Though extremely risky, he knew he couldn’t just do nothing. As he approached the whale, he noticed that the netting was pulled across its head as well — preventing it from eating.

With a diving knife in hand, Paul carefully began cutting away the net. It was a tense situation, since any sudden movement from the whale could have ended in disaster for him. One powerful dive from the freed animal could have pulled Paul under.

He started by clearing the net from the whale’s eyes and mouth. Surprisingly, the whale stayed completely still — almost as if it understood that Paul was there to help.

Once the entangled whale was finally freed, it didn’t swim off right away. Instead, it lingered near the boat, trailing behind the couple as if to show its appreciation for their help.
