The New Year and Christmas holidays come and go, leaving behind memories and a pile of tangerine peels. But what’s a festive season without the refreshing scent of citrus? Let’s extend that holiday feeling throughout the year and make the most of the tangerines we enjoy.

Lately, we’ve stopped tossing the peels in the trash. They’re packed with vitamins and essential oils, making them far more useful than I ever realized. Now, we dry them out and turn them into a natural air freshener.

The process is simple: I place the peels on the radiator and let them dry until they’re crisp. At first, the dried peels may not seem to have much of a scent. But once you break a piece, the room is instantly filled with a delicate, fresh aroma.

To create a freshener, I take a small cloth pouch, add some broken peel pieces, and mix in a few coffee beans for an extra fragrance boost. After tying up the bag, it becomes an all-natural room freshener!

Instead of relying on chemical-laden sprays, use this homemade alternative. You can hang the bag in your wardrobe, place it on shelves where you store woolens, or even tuck it into the pockets of fur coats to help ward off moths.

If you prefer, you can skip the coffee beans and stick with just the tangerine peels. The subtle citrus scent will still linger, adding a fresh note to your clothes.

For an extra treat, break up the dried peels into smaller pieces and grind them into a fine powder using a coffee grinder. The resulting powder has a wonderful fragrance that’s perfect for a variety of uses!

This tangerine powder can be used to flavor meats, fish, baked goods, mulled wine, or even tea. Just make sure to give your tangerines a good rinse before drying them.
