For the filmās stars, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, it opened the door to newfound fame. Suddenly, they were in the limelight, basking in the adoration of fans. However, a tragic event that occurred before the film’s release overshadowed Grey’s experience, making it difficult for her to enjoy her success.
Years after Dirty Dancing became a cultural phenomenon, Grey reflects on her rise to fame and the decision she made to step away from Hollywood at just 27 years old.
In 1987, the same year the film premiered, Grey was living in Ireland with her boyfriend, Matthew Broderick. The couple was involved in a car accident that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her young daughter. Reports indicate that Broderick was driving on the wrong side of the road when the crash occurred, leading to charges of dangerous driving that were later downgraded to careless driving.
While Grey didnāt suffer serious physical injuries, the emotional toll of the tragedy was profound, leaving her forever changed. Moving forward proved to be an immense challenge.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Grey described the turmoil she felt: āThe contrast between that deep sadness and the survivor’s guilt, paired with being celebrated as the new sensation, just didnāt sit right. I didnāt feel good about being the darling of the town.ā
āMy mindset shifted, and my ambitions transformed,ā she shared with People.
Struggling with her emotions, Grey decided to undergo a nose job in hopes of reclaiming her sense of self. Unfortunately, the procedure didnāt yield the desired results; her face became unrecognizable to herself and others.
āI went into surgery as a celebrity and emerged anonymous,ā she revealed in a 2012 interview. āIt felt like I was in witness protection or completely invisible. It was the nose job from hell. Iāll always be that once-famous actress no one recognizes because of my nose.ā
About ten years ago, Grey felt a renewed desire to re-enter the film industry. Winning Dancing with the Stars gave her the boost she needed to move past her previous struggles.
āIt felt like I had been starving myself based on othersā perceptions. This was like savoring a delicious steak after a 23-year diet,ā Grey told People.
Today, she has made a triumphant return to the screen, starring in films such as Untogether, Red Oaks, Bittersweet Symphony, and I Am Patrick Swayze.
However, Grey faced significant health challenges during this time. Medical evaluations revealed she was at risk of paralysis.
āHer spine was literally failing. One misstep, a sudden fall, or a jolt could have caused severe damage to her spinal cord,ā explained Dr. Robert Bray Jr., a neurological spinal surgeon, to ABC. āWe were talking about the possibility of complete paralysis.ā
Dr. Bray performed multiple surgeries, including the insertion of a titanium plate into her spine. Unfortunately, more alarming news followed when doctors discovered a cancerous growth on her thyroid.
Fortunately, Grey reported that the doctors were able to remove the cancer before it spread.
In 2010, she underwent four major surgeries, including the removal of her thyroid.
Now, she feels great and is thriving.
Itās clear that Jennifer Greyās career trajectory would have been drastically different had it not been for that life-altering accident. Thankfully, she has returned to Hollywood, where she truly belongs.
