A new generation has arrived in John Lennon’s family. Sean Ono Lennon, the only son of the Beatles musician and Yoko Ono, has become a father for the first time at 50. His longtime partner, 39-year-old Charlotte Kemp Muhl, gave birth to a son named Aurelius.
The family news surfaced on September 1 when Sean’s older half-brother Julian Lennon shared his excitement about becoming an uncle. Julian, 63, is John Lennon’s son from his marriage to Cynthia Powell and had recently spent time in London.
Celebrating the arrival, Julian referred to his newborn nephew as a “Beautiful Boy.” The choice of words had a special connection to the family: John Lennon recorded “Beautiful Boy” for Sean when he was a child. Julian subsequently removed his post.
Sean later introduced the baby himself through a collection of personal photographs. One image captured him with his son, while another showed Sean and Charlotte posing together with the newest member of their family.
In his announcement, Sean jokingly confirmed that he and Charlotte had successfully “made a human” before telling followers that their child was called Aurelius. He also posted a photograph taken shortly after the delivery in which Charlotte could be seen holding the newborn, accompanying it with the brief words “Baby and mama!”
Charlotte offered a humorous glimpse into her first days of motherhood as well. She admitted that sleep deprivation had already made everything seem somewhat unreal, asked for tips on helping a newborn burp and joked about DNA. Music is apparently already part of Aurelius’ surroundings too, as Charlotte said she had played Aphex Twin and Stravinsky for him.
Aurelius holds a notable distinction within the Lennon family: he is the late John Lennon’s first grandson. Yoko Ono, who is 93, was already a grandmother through her eldest daughter Kyoko, who has two children.
Sean and Charlotte’s relationship began in 2007. They have remained together for 19 years without officially marrying and have also built a musical partnership. The couple performs together under the name The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.
Fatherhood had an important place in John Lennon’s later life. His relationship with Julian was difficult during his eldest son’s childhood, and they only grew closer when Julian became a teenager. Lennon himself acknowledged that he had fallen short as a father to him.
Sean’s childhood unfolded differently. After his younger son arrived, John deliberately stepped away from much of his career for a period and took an active role in looking after him.
That chapter ended abruptly in December 1980, when Mark Chapman fatally shot John Lennon outside his residence in New York. Sean was just five years old when his father died, while Julian was 17.
Julian never went on to marry or have children, and he has previously associated that choice with the difficult experience of his own family history. Sean’s newborn son has now given him a new family role: for the first time, Julian is an uncle, while Sean and Charlotte are beginning life as parents.
