Mariah Carey needed only one old photograph and a few words to bring back deeply personal memories. On the second anniversary of the death of her mother, Patricia Carey, the singer paid tribute to the woman with whom she shared a complicated but exceptionally strong relationship.
The pop superstar looked back on her childhood by posting an archival photograph on Instagram. The image shows Mariah as a little girl together with her mother, long before fame transformed her into one of the most recognizable singers in the world.
Carey accompanied the picture with a simple and emotional message: “I miss you.”
The photograph presents a version of Mariah that millions of fans accustomed to seeing her on concert stages and glamorous red carpets may barely recognize. Young Mariah is sitting in front of her mother and appears relaxed and carefree, capturing an ordinary family moment from years before her international career began.
Patricia Carey died on August 24, 2024, at the age of 87. For Mariah, however, that date brought a second devastating loss. Her older sister Alison also died on the same day at the age of 63.
At the time, the singer said that her “heart is broken” and asked the public to respect her family’s privacy. That makes August 24 more than simply the anniversary of her mother’s death: it marks the day Carey lost two close family members within a matter of hours.
The touching childhood photograph also carries additional meaning because Mariah never pretended that her relationship with Patricia had always been easy. In her autobiography, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she spoke openly about the difficult history between them.
Carey described their relationship as containing love and admiration alongside pain, disappointment and other complicated emotions. Patricia was a former opera singer and vocal coach who studied at the Juilliard School, and music became an important connection between mother and daughter.

Despite the wounds that existed between them, Mariah later revealed that she and her mother had reconciled before Patricia’s death. According to the singer, her mother said things to her that brought a sense of healing and reconciliation.
That history gives the newly shared photograph an especially personal significance. Behind what initially appears to be a simple childhood snapshot is the story of a mother and daughter whose relationship went through difficult periods but remained emotionally important.
Two years after Patricia’s death, Carey chose not to accompany her remembrance with a lengthy explanation. Instead, one photograph from a very different chapter of her life and the brief words “I miss you” expressed what she wanted to say.
