Seeing George and Amal Clooney together at a glamorous event is nothing unusual. Seeing them accompanied by their children, however, is a completely different story. The couple recently brought their eight-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, to a charity dinner in Italy, giving the public a rare chance to see them after years largely outside the spotlight.
The family appeared together near Lake Como for an event connected to the Clooney Foundation for Justice. Everyone dressed for the occasion, but this time even Amal, 48, known for her polished sense of style, had some serious competition for attention. Alexander wore an elegant beige jacket, while Ella appeared in a shimmering gold dress.
Keeping the twins out of celebrity culture has been a deliberate decision for George, 65, and Amal, who married in 2014. The children spend much of their lives on the family’s farm in France, a setting their parents consider far removed from the pressures that can accompany growing up with a famous surname.
George previously admitted that the idea of raising Ella and Alexander in Los Angeles worried him. He felt Hollywood culture could make it difficult for them to have an ordinary childhood, especially with photographers following them and inevitable comparisons being made with other celebrity children. France, he explained, offers them a very different environment because fame attracts considerably less attention there.
Life at home is intentionally kept grounded. George, who also spent part of his childhood on a farm, has said Ella and Alexander are not simply left sitting with their iPads. They join adults for dinner and are expected to take their plates away afterward. For the actor, these seemingly small routines are part of giving his children what he describes as a much better life.
The twins already have another impressive advantage: languages. George and Amal revealed in a September 2022 interview that Ella and Alexander speak Italian as well as French. There is one amusing problem with the Italian — their parents do not speak it themselves. George joked that teaching the children a language they cannot understand was a “terrible mistake” because it gave the twins a secret weapon against them.
Their latest appearance is particularly notable because George and Amal have remained extremely protective of their children’s privacy. Rather than regularly bringing them onto red carpets or sharing their lives publicly, the couple have allowed Ella and Alexander to grow up mostly away from cameras.
The occasion itself also has personal importance for their parents. George and Amal established the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2016, with its work including free legal assistance aimed at protecting freedom of expression and women’s rights in more than 40 countries. This time, however, it was the sight of their rarely seen children standing beside them that became the most striking part of the family evening.
