27-year-old Nicolo Saverino from the Italian town of Aprilia no longer looks like an ordinary person. Over ten years, he has completely transformed himself — and now his appearance can scare even the bravest.
Since childhood, Nicolo dreamed of tattoos and couldn’t wait to come of age to start making his dream come true. At 18, he got his first tattoo, and after that he couldn’t stop. Today, almost 70% of his skin is covered with tattoos. He split his tongue in two, inserted subdermal implants imitating horns, and decorated his body with countless tunnels and piercings.
Nicolo says all of this is his way of self-expression. He sees beauty where others see ugliness. “I don’t want to look like anyone else. I don’t follow other people’s examples — I create my own style. I see art even in what others find strange,” he admits.
However, being a “mutant” in the modern world is not easy. Passersby often turn to look at him with disapproval, and he receives insults online every day. But Nicolo has learned not to react. He says he’s not going to let other people’s negativity destroy his inner peace. “People often pour out their poison just because they’re bored. But that’s their problem, not mine,” the Italian adds.
Despite the aggression from some, he also receives a lot of support. His grandparents, who raised him alone, fully accepted his choice and are proud of who he has become. And strangers on the streets often come up to praise his courage and originality.
“I’m pleased when someone says I inspire them to be themselves. That means everything I’ve done with my body wasn’t in vain,” Nicolo admits, calling himself nothing less than a “human mutant.”
