When volunteers first found the tiny dog now known as Simon, he was barely surviving. Covered in thick mats of tangled fur, he could hardly walk. A Shih Tzu by breed, Simon’s condition told a heartbreaking story — not only had he likely been abandoned, but he’d also been severely neglected for a long time.
Shih Tzus have long, flowing coats that require regular grooming and care. But Simon’s fur had turned into heavy dreadlocks, indicating he hadn’t seen a groomer — or even a brush — in ages. The matted fur was so severe it caused him pain and trapped heat, leaving him exhausted and unable to move freely.
Volunteers were stunned by his condition — and deeply moved. After a much-needed grooming session, Simon was nearly unrecognizable. Beneath the layers of tangled hair was a sweet, older dog with bright eyes and a playful spirit. Once freed from the weight of his neglected coat, Simon came to life — running, playing, and enjoying simple things again.

Though his transformation was incredible, his rescuers know that Simon’s journey isn’t over. Life on the streets has left emotional scars, and he will need time and professional care to fully recover. He’s currently working with a trainer to help him regain trust and confidence before he can be placed in a loving forever home.
