Are you still wondering how to keep your scissors razor-sharp? ✂️💥 Professional sharpening is not needed at all when there is a super method that you can use at HOME with a few simple tools! 🛠️🧰 I learnt this super easy trick from an experienced dressmaker back in the 1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣0️⃣s ready to share it with you in this article! 👇
All of my scissors stay incredibly sharp, thanks to a valuable lesson I learned from an experienced dressmaker back in the ‘90s. It turns out that maintaining your scissors’ edge doesn’t require professional sharpening—it can be done at home with a few simple tools!
The key to keeping your scissors cutting smoothly is to avoid letting them become completely dull. Regularly sharpening them at home will save you from having to replace them or take them to a specialist.
One of the most effective methods I use involves a fine needle. To sharpen the scissors, I hold the needle at the edge of the blades and, as if opening the scissors, slide the needle toward the opening.
I repeat this action 6-7 times, and after that, the scissors cut more effectively, almost as if they’re brand new.
For a quick fix, you can also use a glass medicine bottle. Place the scissors with the neck of the bottle and, just like with the needle, open and close the scissors on the neck. Doing this 6-7 times is enough to sharpen the blades significantly. It only takes a few seconds!
If your scissors are extremely dull and can’t even cut paper properly, a more thorough sharpening method is necessary. For this, you’ll need fine-grit sandpaper.
Lay the sandpaper flat on a surface like a glass picture frame. Then, cut along the edge of the sandpaper, making sure the angle of the cutting edge aligns perfectly with the paper. Repeat a few times, and you should notice a significant improvement.
This method works for all kinds of scissors, including those used for stationery or tailoring.
Sometimes, scissors will stop cutting properly if the rivet is too loose. If that happens, simply tap the rivet lightly with a hammer to tighten it.
For higher-quality scissors, which often come with screws instead of rivets, you can simply tighten them with a screwdriver if they feel too loose.
Out of all the scissors I use, my absolute favorite are a pair I bought online. These scissors are perfect for cutting through any fabric, and they never lose their sharpness, no matter how often I use them!
