In their book Marlo admitted that she was more than sure that marriage was like a vacuum cleaner which takes one’s energy and ambition. She associated it with living in prison. However, crossing paths with Phil changed everything.

They formed a special bond after Donahue’s first marriage. As a reminder, he gained fame with «The Phil Donahue Show» which was the first one which let the audience join in. Marlo was a guest and since that day they have been sharing their lives together.

It was in 1977 that they started dating and it took them 3 years to decide on marriage. They officially became a family after having an intimate ceremony with no more than 35 people. To say that Marlo’s friends were speechless is nothing to say. Considering her prior views on marriage, they couldn’t perceive the fact that she made such a decision.

Marlo added that she wondered whether she was being hypocritical since she had criticized marriage for so long. The married couple faced ups and downs in their marriage. Later, they admitted that those hard times strengthened their bond instead of putting an end to their marriage.
Interestingly enough, before marrying Marlo, Phil already had children from his previous relationship. In the book Marlo mentioned that she didn’t want to take on the role of their mother but she was expected to form a good relationship with them.
