Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Debuts Long Curly Hair — And Fans Can’t Believe the Transformation

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson just shocked fans with a completely different look — and it’s unlike anything people are used to seeing.

In the first trailer for Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana, the actor appears with thick, shoulder-length curls, replacing his signature clean-shaven bald style. The transformation is so dramatic that many viewers barely recognized him at first glance.

But the hair is only part of the change. To fully embody the demigod Maui, Johnson underwent an intense physical transformation that included heavy prosthetics and full-body tattoos designed to match the animated version of the character.

According to the actor, the process involved around 18 kilograms of prosthetics, adding both size and detail to his appearance. Combined with the intricate tattoo work, the result is a version of Maui that feels strikingly close to the original — but brought into the real world.

For Johnson, the role carries personal meaning. Drawing on his Samoan heritage, he has spoken about how deeply connected he feels to the story of Moana, which is rooted in Polynesian culture and family traditions. He also noted that the inspiration was his late grandfather.

Fans were quick to react online, with many focusing on his unexpected hairstyle — a detail that instantly became one of the most talked-about elements of the trailer.

It’s a bold transformation, but one that shows just how far Johnson is willing to go to bring the character to life.
