One day, a woman visited a wise man to share her struggles. For years, she had lived with suspicion, convinced that her husband might be unfaithful. Yet, she never found any proof. Still, her thoughts tormented her daily, filling her with insecurity and doubt. The wise man asked her: “Why do you question your husband so much?”
The woman explained that in the early days of marriage, life was hard. They lived with his parents, had little money, and she accepted her husband as he was. Over time, however, things changed. Both he and their children became successful, and that’s when her fears began. She convinced herself that wealth and generosity would surely attract other women.
She compared women looking for partners to investors buying shares: “When they pick something cheap, they lose interest. When they find something valuable, they feel insecure and restless. You can’t trust anyone in this world.” These thoughts haunted her for many years.
The wisdom of the sage
The wise man listened, then quietly picked up an apple. Slowly peeling it, he said: “On the outside, it looks perfect. But perhaps there are worms inside. So I keep cutting layer by layer, searching deeper and deeper. The more I cut, the less of the apple remains. In the end, only the core is left. Do you see what happens?”
