For more than a decade, Philibert Aspairt’s fate remained a mystery. It wasn’t until 1804—eleven years later—that his skeletal remains were accidentally discovered during an official inspection of the catacombs. The only way officials could identify him was through the set of keys still attached to his body, bearing the markings of Val-de-Grâce Hospital.
