Barbra Streisand Returns to the Oscars Stage After 7 Years With Emotional Tribute

Barbra Streisand created one of the most emotional moments of the 2026 Academy Awards when she returned to the Oscars stage for the first time in seven years.

The legendary singer and actress appeared during the ceremony’s “In Memoriam” segment on March 15, delivering a moving tribute to her late co-star Robert Redford, who passed away last year at the age of 89.

As she stepped onto the stage, the audience immediately fell silent.

Streisand began by sharing a personal memory from the early days of the film The Way We Were. She explained that when she first read the script, there was only one actor she could imagine playing the role opposite her.

“After I read the first script for The Way We Were, I could only picture one man in that role, and that was Robert Redford,” she told the audience.

She then revealed that Redford initially turned down the part. According to Streisand, he believed the character lacked depth and stood for very little. “And he was right,” she said, explaining that the script went through several revisions before he eventually agreed to join the project.

Streisand described Redford as a man who possessed strong character both on and off screen. She called him thoughtful, courageous and deeply respected within the film industry.

The tribute carried extra emotional weight because Streisand has performed the same song on the Oscars stage before. In 2013 she sang it during the “In Memoriam” segment honoring composer Marvin Hamlisch.

Although Streisand has rarely appeared on major stages in recent years, her voice remains one of the most recognizable in entertainment. Her last full concert tour took place in 2017, and in 2019 she headlined major performances in London’s Hyde Park and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Her connection with Redford goes back to their iconic film The Way We Were, where Streisand played the politically passionate Katie and Redford portrayed Hubbell, a man whose outlook on life and politics differed from hers.

More than four decades later, their on-screen partnership is still remembered as one of the most powerful romantic dramas of its era.

For many viewers watching the ceremony, Streisand’s return felt like a rare and deeply personal moment — one where Hollywood paused to honor both a legendary actor and the unforgettable bond he shared with his co-star.
