Prince George is celebrating his 12th birthday today, and his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, marked the occasion with a newly released portrait of their eldest son.

As part of a family tradition, the royal couple shared a new image of George on his special day. Dressed in a crisp white shirt with a subtle blue check pattern and sleeves rolled up to the elbows, he also wore a brown fleece zip-up vest. A charming detail in the otherwise countryside-inspired outfit was a handmade-looking blue-and-white string bracelet, likely a sweet gift from his younger sister, Charlotte.

The portrait was taken at the family’s country estate, Anmer Hall in Norfolk. George posed casually in front of a wooden fence, with a lush garden behind him. His hair was slightly tousled, and he smiled warmly at the camera. The photo was accompanied by a cheerful caption: “Happy 12th Birthday, Prince George!” along with a cake emoji.

Kate, a keen amateur photographer, has often taken her children’s portraits for birthdays, typically favoring natural, outdoor settings over formal palace backdrops. However, after a photo editing controversy last year, the princess now prefers to leave official birthday portraits to professionals.

This latest image was taken by photographer Josh Shinner, who has previously worked with the royal family. He was also behind the black-and-white holiday portrait released in 2023, as well as Prince Louis’s 7th birthday portrait in April.

Shinner’s style remains consistent across the siblings’ portraits, often capturing them in relaxed, outdoor environments. In June, a Father’s Day photo taken by Shinner featured Prince William with his three children. That image, along with George’s birthday portrait, appears to be from the same photoshoot. For Princess Charlotte’s 10th birthday in May, however, Kate once again picked up the camera herself.

Prince George Alexander Louis was born on July 22, 2013, at 4:24 PM local time, in the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. He is currently second in line to the British throne after his father.

This year, George has taken on a more visible role within the royal family. In April, he accompanied Prince William to a Champions League match in Paris, strengthening their bond over a shared love for football. In May, he joined his family at Victory Day events at Buckingham Palace, and in June, he stood proudly alongside them for King Charles III’s official birthday celebrations. Most recently, he attended the men’s final at Wimbledon with his parents and sister.
