The premiere of WWE’s Monday Night Raw on Netflix brought together some of the biggest names in wrestling, but not everyone received a hero’s welcome. While stars like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, John Cena, and The Undertaker basked in roaring applause at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, on January 6, Hulk Hogan’s reception was far less warm.
The 71-year-old wrestling legend was met with loud boos from the 17,000 fans in attendance as he promoted WWE’s new partnership with Netflix and his personal collaboration with the company to market his Real American Beer brand.
“I’ve had a lot of notable allies in his wrestling career,” Hogan said, struggling to be heard over the crowd’s jeers, according to Variety. “From the Macho Man Randy Savage to Andre the Giant, I’ve teamed up with legends. But tonight, WWE is making history with the ultimate tag team partner—Netflix.”
The moment quickly gained traction on social media, with fans relishing the scene. One user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “Hulk Hogan trying to win over the crowd and getting drowned out by boos—chef’s kiss.” Another wrote, “Watching Hulk Hogan fail to sell his knockoff Bud Light beer while being booed relentlessly was absolutely glorious. And this is coming from a lifelong Hulkamaniac.”
Once the undisputed face of professional wrestling, Hogan’s image has become divisive in recent years. In 2015, WWE severed ties with him and removed him from the Hall of Fameafter a controversial recording emerged showing Hogan using offensive language.
At the time, Hogan publicly acknowledged the mistake and apologized, stating, “There’s no excuse for the language I used. I deeply regret my actions and continue to strive to become a better person every day. This experience has been a significant learning moment for me.”
In 2018, Hogan was reinstated into the WWE Hall of Fame after multiple public apologies and youth-focused outreach activities, including personalized mentorship on the importance of learning from mistakes. WWE noted his “commitment to personal growth” in their decision to reinstate him.
On Monday morning, WWE disclosed a new long-term partnership to promote Hogan’s Real American Beer on Raw and social media platforms, including branding in the ring. As part of the deal, WWE has also taken a minority stake in Hogan’s beer company.
The Raw Netflix debut wasn’t just about Hogan’s return—it featured appearances by Nikki Garcia Travis Scott. Celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens, Tiffany Haddish, and Richard Gadd were also spotted in the audience, adding star power to the event.
Despite the mixed reactions, the evening marked a historic step for WWE, with the move to Netflix signaling a bold new chapter. For Hogan, however, it was a reminder of how much his relationship with fans has evolved over the years.
